The Shaft-Tail or Long-Tailed Finch is a common species of estrildid finch found in Australia; also known as the Blackheart Finch, Heck's grassfinch, Heck's Grass Finch, and Heck's Finch. Shaft Tail finches are very popular among the bird community!

They have beautiful grey heads and black "bib" extending from chin to the throat, black markings extending from each side of the beak to the eye, brown back and wings, pinkish-brown colored breast and belly, black thighs, white rump, black tail with long tail wires, orange legs.

Average size for adults: 5-6 inches in length and 11.4-17.6 grams in weight.

Lifespan: 7 to 10 years

Diet: Classic Finch Seed, Millet, Dried Egg Food, Mineral Grit, live food (mealworms), fresh greens. Always provide fresh water!
